Write to Jairam Ramesh – Double Standards | Save the turtles

Dear All,

Is there hypocrisy in the corridors of power? The Ministry of Environment and Forest (MoEF) has given a clean chit to the Dhamra port in Orissa in front of the Central Empowered Committee (CEC), even though the port has clearly violated the Forest Conservation Act 1980.

The ministry has contradicted its own regional office, which has repeatedly confirmed this violation for several years[1]. This ministry had earlier punished Vedanta for violating the law,[2] but has shown its double standards in the case of Dhamra. Are rules different for different corporations?

The Dhamra port poses a threat to the fragile ecology and fisheries of the area, the mangrove forests and crocodiles of the Bhitarkanika National Park and the Olive Ridley sea turtles. Minister Jairam Ramesh needs to know that these double standards won't do – the law must apply equally to all.

Can you write to Mr. Jairam Ramesh asking him to implement the law impartially?

Public opinion and anger against Vedanta made the government take action. By showing him the depth of public sentiment against the Dhamra project we can pressurise Minister Jairam Ramesh to do the right thing again.

The ministry never acted on the reports of its regional office in Bhubaneswar. Now in a recent affidavit to the CEC[3], the ministry has flatly contradicted its regional office's stand, without any explanation.

It's time the ministry explained its internal contradictions and took a just and impartial stand to save our environment.

Write to Jairam Ramesh and ask him to be impartial:

Thanks a billion!

Two hours: one golden opportunity

Dear Animal Lovers,

Do you have two hours to spare this week? If yes, you can make a difference without having to travel a distance or expend any energy. We have an opportunity to connect with our Jain patrons this week during their Paryushan -the period when all the Jains visit the temples in the morning between 9 and 11am and in the evening between 7.00-9.30pm. During this time, they donate generously to causes that are close to their heart, animal welfare being one of them.

We are on the lookout for volunteers who will be present at the temples on behalf of the voiceless, requesting them to donate towards Jeevdaya: compassion for all life forms. There are close to 50 temples across the city and we are sure you will find something close by and convenient. This is a golden chance for us to raise much-needed funds that will feed our 2500 residents and provide them medical treatment and offer them a chance of rehabilitation.

The central coordinator is our Resident GM, Mr. Dawn Williams, a former NSG Commando who has now dedicated himself to service to animals. Please contact him at 9176025265 to collect a donation box and get started. As the festival has already begun, time is of the essence. The animals need our help now. Please get in touch and thank you for your compassion!

Dear Animal Lovers,
Hope this email finds you and your family in good health. At Blue Cross, we are gearing up for the Joy of Giving week - a forum to spread awareness for our cause and also raise funds for our activities. It is a celebration of charity and we hope you will join us by talking to your friends, family and organizations and inviting them to support us during this event.

We've jotted down the important details in the attached word document (we promise it won't take you long to read it). Please check it out and pass it along to corporates, institutions and individuals who would like to chip in. As always, we will be grateful if you could join us too! Every rupee you help us raise will change a life for the better.

Thanks and best wishes from the animals
